NAMAKKAL: Active participation of students is needed to spread awareness among people on population explosion and its negative impacts, Collector G. Sundaramurthi has said.

Participating at an awareness programme organised to mark the World Population Day here recently, the Collector said that the population in the country had crossed 112 crore.

The country would face serious problems in providing food, shelter, clothes and other amenities to the people, if the population growth remained unchecked.

India was progressing at a fast pace and population control was vital to ensure sustained growth in the country, he stressed.

Mr. Sundaramurthi said that the students should volunteer to create awareness on population explosion and its consequences among people particularly those living in rural areas.

Deputy Director, Family Welfare, M. Gnanasekaran, pointed out that the increase in population would lead to serious issues such as pollution and deterioration of sanitary conditions.

People would have to face severe shortage of space, amenities and food. He called upon the students to play an active role in spreading awareness.

He said that the health department had performed a large number of family planning operations.

Mr. Gunasekaran asked the medical officers and health officials to extend full co-operation to the population control activities.

Earlier, the district administration organised an awareness rally to highlight the negative effects of population explosion.

The rally passed through several important streets in the town. More than 700 students from various schools participated.

Joint Director of Health Dakshinamurthi, Deputy Director (leprosy) C. Bharathidasan, Deputy Director (Tuberculosis) C. Udayashankar and senior officials were present.
