MADURAI: The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has sanctioned funds to establish ‘mini renewable energy demo parks’ in four southern districts to spread an awareness of solar energy.

The parks, each costing Rs. 2.23 lakh, will be set up in the Western Ghat region of Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.

Each will possess nine non-conventional energy generating devices, according to the Deputy General Manager of Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency, S.M. Vijayakumar.

“The maintenance and operation of these parks would be entrusted with the district administration, which will post people for explaining the functioning of the equipment.”

Tourist attraction

The parks would be located in places that would attract tourists. “In Theni district, the park would be situated near the Vaigai Dam,” he said.

It would comprise solar photovoltaic cell-powered equipment, such as streetlights and lantern, besides solar paraphernalia like water-heating system, solar box cooker and dish cooker. Other instruments include biogas plant cut model, biomass gasifier, windmill water pump and improved cook stove (fixed and portable models).
