KRISHNAGIRI: The announcement regarding the updating of survey on formation of new rail line from Jolarpet-Hosur via Krishnagiri was a positive step, said V. Gnanasekaran, Treasurer, Hosur Small and Tiny Industries Association (HOSTIA), here on Wednesday.

Reacting to the Railway Budget 2010, Mr. Gnanasekaran said that the survey for the project was conducted in 1997 and the project cost at that time was estimated at Rs. 226.42 crore. It was submitted to the Railway Board in 2001.

Another survey was conducted for a new rail link between Krishnagiri to Dharmapuri in 2004-05 at an estimated cost of Rs. 410.71 crore. Finally, another survey was conducted to lay new rail line from Tirupattur to Hosur via Bargur, Krishnagiri and Shoolagiri for a length of 101 km at an estimated cost of Rs. 558.24 crore during May 2008 and sent to the Railway Board for approval.

He requested Railway Minister Mamata Banerji to run a direct train between Hosur and Chennai via Bangalore as an alternative till the new line was laid between Jolarpet and Hosur.

He also appealed for reintroduction of inter-city express between Bangalore-Coimbatore via Hosur.

D. Chandrasekaran, Secretary, Krishnagiri District TNEB Pensioners Association, urged for speedy implementation of the project.E.G. Sugavanam, MP, told The Hindu over phone from New Delhi that the new project would improve the economic development of the district. The survey to be conducted for another rail link between Krishnagiri and Chamrajnagar in Karnataka would benefit the cocoon farmers.
