‘Ensure that benefits reach people’

SALEM: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam has appealed to the officials of various departments to ensure that the benefits of government welfare schemes reached all the eligible persons.

Participating at a function held in Dathapuram in Edapadi block on Monday, the minister said that the government had introduced a number of schemes including health care programmes for the welfare of the people.

A majority of the schemes were aimed at improving the quality of life of the poor. The benefits of these schemes should reach the target persons properly. Officials have the responsibility of taking the benefits to the people.

Irregularities reported

The minister said a few irregularities in the implementation of the welfare schemes were reported in the State. Such issues should not recur in the future. The officials should realise their responsibilities and extend quality services to the people, he said.

Mr. Arumugam said the Kalaignar Insurance Scheme would provide insurance cover to over four crore people in the State. All the families with an annual income of Rs.72,000 or less are eligible for benefits under the scheme. The government had allotted over Rs. 500 crore for the implementation of the scheme.

Later, he distributed free colour television sets to 1,498 families and free stove and gas connections to 192 persons.
