‘The natural beauty of this hill station can be preserved only by preventing such activities’

Udhagamandalam: The need to prevent defacing of public walls has been emphasised by the Nilgiris Collector Anandrao V. Patil.

Presiding over a meeting in which representatives of various political parties participated, the Collector lamented that some of the parties and individuals were indiscriminately pasting posters, hence defacing the walls.

Season

Pointing out that it marred the beauty of the town, he said that since the season was in progress here it was the duty of all sections of the society to ensure that the tourists returned with a good impression about the place. The holiday destination should be maintained in such a manner that it would make the visitors come again.

Litter free

Expressing the hope that the people would keep public places litter free and avoid pasting posters in inappropriate places, he said that all should ensure that the Adam Memorial Fountain at Charing Cross here was not misused.

Its beauty should be protected at all costs. Stating that suitable action would be taken against those defacing public places, Mr.Patil opined that only by putting an end to such activities could the natural beauty of this hill station be preserved.

Pointing out that the use of disposable plastic items like carry bags, cups and plates was banned in the district, he said that stringent action would be taken against those who either used or sold such items.

Meanwhile concerned citizens said that the administration should not stop with merely making an appeal. Contending that a mere appeal cannot bring about a turnaround on the environment front here, they told The Hindu that since there is no self discipline, the authorities should enforce discipline.

Regretting that the town continued to wear a shabby look notwithstanding numerous representations and assurances over the last few years, they said that the rules relating to the pasting of posters, erection of hoardings etc laid down by the district administration should be strictly adhered to by various political parties.
