‘Awareness levels increasing’

SALEM: The awareness level among women in the rural areas on health and various government programmes increased significantly following the formation of self-help groups, Union Minister of State of Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan said.

Participating in a function organised to distribute free colour television sets in Vellaiyampalayam village in Sakagiri taluk on Saturday, the minister said that women in the rural areas are now better recognised and empowered due to the SHG movement.

It had also helped them to a great extent to improve their socio-economic conditions, she pointed out.

The minister said that the Tamil Nadu Government was implementing a number of programmes for the welfare of women, particularly those living in the rural areas.

Pregnant women were being given Rs. 6,000 as assistance under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit scheme.

Financial assistance was being provided for marriage under Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme, she said.

Later, she distributed free colour televisions to 1,040 beneficiaries in the village.
