Letter threatens to blow up installations in Mettur

Special Correspondent

METTUR: The police on Thursday beefed up security in and around the Stanley reservoir and on the court premises of Judicial Magistrate No. II.

This followed the receipt of an anonymous letter, threatening to blow up vital installations here, for issuing of the non-bailable warrant (NBW) against actor Kushboo, in response to a private petition regarding her statement on pre-marital sex.

An anonymous letter received by Judicial Magistrate II, M. Sridharan, who had issued the NBW against the actor, said he had encouraged a false complaint and issued the NBW with the intention of garnering publicity, before enlarging her on bail. His action belittled a woman belonging to the Muslim community.

It further warned that the court premises, the 16-vent surplus weir of the Stanley reservoir and the Cauvery Cross Bridge would be blasted using RDX explosives on December 1.

Written in Tamil

The letter, dated November 28 and written in Tamil, originated from Chennai.

Mr. Sridharan referred it to his superior authorities who asked him to file a police complaint. This was done on November 30.

Heavy police reinforcements were deployed at various points here. Armed guards were posted on court premises and on the Stanley reservoir.

Thorough search

The Magistrate was also provided security with armed policemen.

However, a thorough search to trace any objects of a suspicious nature drew a blank.

The police, led by DSP Krishna Raju, have increased mobile patrolling and issued alerts to major industrial units and vital installations.
