Lessons in fire fighting

CHENNAI, JULY 24. A week after the fire tragedy at Kumbakonam which left more than 90 children dead, several schools in the city and suburbs have now started to teach their children the precautions to be taken in the event of a fire accident.

The Fire Services and Rescue department has been conducting mock drills and demonstrations in schools.

Personnel from the department conducted a mock drill at the D.A.V. Boys School at Mogappair today. They said students were taught the basics of fire fighting — using common fire extinguishers. They were also briefed on how to avoid a stampede on their school premises in the event of a fire.

Personnel from the Indian Air Force Station at Tambaram volunteered to conduct a mock drill at the Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Selaiyur today.

The demonstration was held for teachers of Matriculation schools in the Chengalpattu Education District.

Techniques used

The Air Force personnel explained to the students, the different types of fires and the kind of extinguishers that had to be used accordingly. Officials from the Directorate of Matriculation Schools were also present. At Sri Venkateswara Hindu Colony Middle School at Nanganallur, students, staff and parents offered prayers for the victims.
