AIADMK chief campaigns in Sivakasi for Vaiko

SIVAKASI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Thursday alleged that Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi called the State-wide strike only to disrupt her campaign schedule and not for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils.

“My visit to campaign for Vaiko here and P.Mohan (in Madurai) was planned several weeks ago. Since the Chief Minister did not want me to campaign for Mr.Vaiko and speak against his son M.K.Azhagiri (in Madurai), he called for the general strike. But, I have come here, so have you in large numbers,” she told an election meeting here.

Misuse of office

Ms.Jayalalithaa alleged misuse of office by DMK’s Central Chennai candidate Dayanidhi Maran during his tenure as Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology. “You people should punish those who were not punished by the Prime Minister himself ... by voting for the AIADMK-led alliance.”

Addressing an election meeting in Madurai, Ms. Jayalalithaa, reminded the electorate of the murder of Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s woman councillor Leelavathi by an armed gang 12 years ago (April 23, 1997). Canvassing votes for the CPI (M) candidate P. Mohan, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the manner in which Leelavathi was brutally killed should not be forgotten or forgiven. The people should think independently and vote. “This is an opportunity to show the doors to the wrong doers and save democracy,” she said.
