CHENNAI: Human excellence is the ultimate goal of education, said B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Coimbatore Kendra. Delivering a lecture on ‘Holistic Education’ here on Saturday, as part of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai Kendra’s golden jubilee lecture series, he said current education is totally examination-oriented, and only the theory part is driven into the students minds.

This has led to the younger generation having dreams for themselves and not for the society or country. “Though literacy and awareness levels have gone up, concern for the nation has not gone up. There is no national pride among us.” “The strength of India is her culture,” he said. “There is no culture equal to India’s. Indian culture was a living culture but it was not being passed on to the next generation.”

Indian youths were in no way inferior to any other youth in the world, he said.

Mr. Vanavarayar, who later interacted with students and teachers from different schools in the city, said topics, including cultural heritage, 100 years of freedom struggle, history of great Indians and challenges of 21st century must be included in the curriculum.
