“Rail budget, disappointing”

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: The Thanjavur District Rail Users Association has said that the Railway Budget presented on Wednesday was “disappointing for the passengers of Tamil Nadu.”

In a press release issued here, A. Giri, vice-president of the association, said that the budget was silent about the doubling of the Chengalpattu-Dindigul section and the new rail line between Kumbakonam and Vriddachalam.

It is highly regrettable that there was no announcement regarding the restoration of famous Boat Mail and all trains in the main line via Kumbakonam which were operated before gauge conversion. The introduction of new passenger train between Mayiladuturai and Thanjavur would be beneficial only if it was extended up to Tiruchi with increased frequency.

The newly-announced train Mangalore-Tiruchi should be extended up to Mayiladuturai and the Madurai-Tirupati train should be operated via main line, he said.
