“Only Bar Council of India can probe charge”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: President of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA), R.C. Paul Kanagaraj, on Tuesday said that only the Bar Council of India could look into the allegation that an advocate in an anticipatory bail matter had met Justice R. Regupathi of the Madras High Court in his chamber and told him that a Union Minister would like to talk to him regarding the case. When his reaction was sought, Mr. Kanagaraj said the advocate was not a member of the MHAA. He was also the chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Hence, the Association could not initiate action against him.

As of now there was no complaint by the presiding officer (Judge concerned) and no contempt was pending. The Association had no role to play as the matter had ended the same day with counsel tendering apology and the Judge accepting it, Mr. Kanagaraj said.
