The V volume will focus on events that followed his visit to Delhi to choose the PM candidate of United Front

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has resumed writing his memoir, Nenjukku Neethi, and the first chapter of the fifth volume appeared in the DMK’s official organ Murasoli on Sunday.

The fourth volume ended with the DMK’s election to power in Tamil Nadu in 1996 and his visit to Delhi to choose the Prime Ministerial candidate.

Mr. Karunanidhi says the first volume was serialised in Tamil weekly, Dinamani Kadir, edited by the late Saavi (Sa.Viswanathan). It covered the period between 1924, his birth year, and 1969, when he first became the Chief Minister. The second volume was published in Kunkumam as Mr. Saavi had joined the Tamil magazine.

In this volume, he confined himself to seven years from 1969. “I crossed 60 when I finished the second volume,” he says.

The Chief Minister explains that though he tried to cover the period between 1976 and 1991 in the third volume, he could do it only up to 1988.

He succeeded in his attempt in the fourth volume that covered 8 years, between 1989 and 1996. He was 80 when the fourth volume was published.

“Nature has allowed me to complete the fourth volume and to resume the fifth,” he says. The Chief Ministers says the fifth volume will focus on the events that followed his visit to Delhi to choose the Prime Ministerial candidate of the United Front after the 1996 elections, but he has also touched upon the events that preceded the elections and it its outcome.

Vital role

He has acknowledged the vital role played by Thuqlak editor Cho in bringing together the DMK and the now-defunct TMC launched by the late G.K. Moopanar in the 1996 elections.

He recalls the attempts made by him and other leaders including the late Moopanar and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to make former Prime Minister V.P. Singh the Prime Ministerial candidate.

But he declined the offer.
