“Learn about consumer rights”

Special Correspondent

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar has called upon the students to develop knowledge on consumer rights.

Speaking after inaugurating a Students’ Consumer Club at the Sethupathy Government Arts College here on Tuesday he said the government had enacted various laws to protect the rights of consumers. However, the consumers had very limited knowledge about the laws. Hence it was necessary for the students to study the advantages and functioning of consumer laws. The students could start consumer clubs in a massive way so that the interest of the consumers could be protected.

Janet Harris, Principal, said no other college in the district had students’ consumer club. The students must utilise the opportunity to create awareness among the people about consumer rights, duties and others.

P. Duraisingam, Head, Department of Economics and Chairman, FEDCOT, said that so far 987 consumer clubs have been started in high and higher secondary schools throughout the State. Similarly, 127 clubs were functioning in colleges.

Earlier, the Collector accepted the guard of honour by NCC students led by Captain A. Gurusamy.
