“India, China maintaining traditional medicine”

TIRUCHI: India and China continue to maintain the traditional medical system despite rapid advancements in the modern medical system on the one hand, S.S. Handa, Chairman, Task Force Medicinal Plants, Department of Bio-Technology, New Delhi said here on Saturday.

We should never forget the rich traditional medical system from where the modern system of medicine developed, Mr. Handa, said while speaking at a national seminar on ‘Herbal Focus 2009’ organised by the Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College on its premises here. Ayurveda is the richest heritage in the world, he said adding that 90 per cent of drugs came from plant sources.

S.K. Sharma, Advisor, Ayurveda, Department of Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoepathy, New Delhi said India had a great tradition of using herbs in a scientific manner. Vedas had given description of medicinal plants. He released a compact disc containing abstracts of the papers presented during the technical session by the student participants.

The Secretary and Correspondent of the College V.S. Narasimhan; Principal Dr. K. Prema; Dean – Life Sciences Dr. P. Brindha were present on the occasion. Mr. Sharma and Mr. Handa distributed certificates and cash awards for best paper presentations.
