TIRUNELVELI: A total of 78 All India Central Council of Trade Union (AICCTU) members, including 15 women, courted arrest at Palayamkottai on Tuesday when they tried to lay siege to the Office of Deputy Commissioner for Labour Welfare.

Pressing for increased dearness allowance, DA arrears and wage hike for beedi industry workers, the AICCTU functionaries had planned to lay siege to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Labour Welfare at Palayamkottai, for which the police had denied permission.

When the protestors, led by the district president of AICCTU, T. Rajamanickam, came to the protest venue with slogans, they were arrested and released in the evening.
