“Globalisation will eradicate poverty in developing nations”

Says N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies

MADURAI: Developing countries now have an opportunity to take their share of limelight in the world economy because of globalisation, said N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies, on Friday.

Delivering the third Founder’s Day address on ‘Being a global manager’ at the Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM) here, he said that half of the world’s gross domestic product was accounted for by the developing countries, indicating the flooding patent applications at the United States Patent Office.

Globalisation would eradicate poverty in developing nations as disposable incomes increased on account of improved employability and enhanced per capita incomes, he said and added that globalised world was all about how fast one could develop new ideas, implement them and gain competitive advantage in the marketplace. Hence, people would become key differentiators where the necessity of able managers would be felt more.

Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu, Wholetime Director, Lakshmi Machine Works, said that the Indian mind, which had the ability to think logically, had helped the country achieve a lot in the global economy.

The emergence of knowledge society was a result of the hard work put in by visionaries, he said.

Karumuttu Thiagarajar Chettiar Award for Outstanding Entrepreneur was presented to K. Subburaj, Chairman, Cethar Vessels, Tiruchi; Karumuttu Manickavasagam Chettiar Award for Distinguished Community Service was given to P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System; Dr. K.M. Thiagarajan Award for Excellence in Management Teaching was presented to S. Tamilselvan, Professor and Head, Department of Management Studies, MEPCO-SCHLENK Engineering College.

Manikam Ramaswami, Correspondent, TSM, welcomed the gathering. Members of Board of Governors, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu Group of Publications, B.T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-Tech Arai, Joseph Zachariah, Director, Vikaasa School, J. Philip, Director, Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship, and M.R.G. Apparao, Director, Thiagarajar School of Management, were present.
