“Conservation works at Danish fort will be completed by December end”

Heritage protection works to the tune of Rs.2.42 crore conceived for the Danish Fort at Tharangambadi will be completed by December end, said V. Irai Anbu, Secretary, Tourism Department at Tranquebar on Wednesday.

Mr. Irai Anbu was here on a brief inspection tour to the heritage protection and tourism development activities at 17th century Danish Fort called the Dansborg. As part of the heritage works at the 17th century Danish settlement, heritage type ornamental granite stone pavements with landscaping has been conceived at a cost of Rs.93.37 lakh in front of the Danish Fort.

The project entails fixing of ornamental cast iron lamp posts along with other accessory works to the tune of Rs.90 lakh. Besides the works at the Danish Fort, ornamental granite stone slabs along with ornamental cast iron lamp posts and adjoining landscapes have been envisages for the Goldsmith street in Tharangamadi. This entails a cost of Rs.59.56 lakh.

Additionally, the Governor's Bungalow facing the Dansborg, which is under renovation by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), envisages a cost of Rs.87 lakh for the conservation works.

Further, Rs.25 lakh has been allotted for paving a cement road, amenities for drinking water, toilets and drainage facilities.

A proposal for a lawn inside the Fort and a park behind the ramparts is under consideration. Mr. Irai Anbu along with A.C.Mohandas, Tourism Director, inspected the beach beautification works here at the Nagapattinam New Beach.
