She rejected his marriage proposal

A 20-year-old youth stabbed a 19-year-old girl in front of her house in E. Rediyapatti, near Sattur in Virudhunagar district. Within minutes, he hanged himself in his house on Saturday.

According to police, the girl, identified as Pon Mahalakshmi, daughter of Selvaraj, was studying in first year B.Ed at a private teacher training college in Thoothukudi district. She had come home for the weekend.

She, along with some of her neighbours, went to the street corner to fetch potable water from the public tap. The youth, Madan alias Madankumar of the same locality and studying Law in Madurai, spotted her. He took out a sharp weapon and hit her. When the girl collapsed, the neighbours raised an alarm but Madan escaped from the spot. Later, he was found hanging at his house.

As the news spread, police from Elayirampannai station rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to Sattur Government Hospital for post-mortem.

Inquiries suggested he was in love with the girl and had reportedly been compelling her to get engaged.
