Lalitha Kameswaran passes away

CHENNAI Nov. 24. The first Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Lalitha Kameswaran, died at a private hospital today after a brief illness. She was 72.

Daughter of Navalar Somasundara Bharathi, she completed her MBBS from Stanley Medical College and obtained her Ph.D from the University of London.

She was appointed the first woman dean of the Madras Medical College and was also the first woman Director of Medical Education.

She also served as Member, State Planning Commission.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. S. Kameswaran, a son and a daughter.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, expressed shock and deep grief at the demise. In a message to Dr. Kameswaran, Ms. Jayalalithaa said her passing away was ``not only an irreparable loss to the family but also to the medical profession and to our State.''

Recalling her services to the State, the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, expressed his grief over her demise and conveyed his condolences to Dr. Lalithaa Kameswaran's family.
