Korattur still to get piped water

CHENNAI, MARCH 17. Piped water supply still remains a dream for residents of Korattur, despite the Ambattur Municipality having cleaned the overhead tank and pipelines in the locality 10 days ago. Councillors allege that the municipality has delayed obtaining water.

The Ambattur municipality currently supplies water through tankers. But Korattur residents complain that the water supplied by the tankers is brackish and in short supply. It has not received piped supply for almost two years now, a resident said.

Others recalled a letter issued from Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department last month directing the local body to restore potable supply by purchasing water from Metrowater instead of private suppliers.

Seshagiri Rao, a Korattur resident, said the overhead tank was cleaned and pipeline repaired to facilitate supply to Korattur. "We hoped to get good quality water with the works completed. At present, we have little option but to spend on private packaged water, which is expensive."

M. Kokila, a Padi resident said she spends about Rs. 800 on water. She demanded that potable water be supplied without further delay.

Another councillor alleged the reason for the delay was non-payment of bills for water purchased.

A Metrowater official said the agency was prepared to supply water. The local body has to decide when they want water and the mode of supply (tanker or through pipes, he said.)

The municipal authorities denied delay in payment and said efforts were on to provide water to Korattur and Padi in a week.
