Knitwear exporters bag orders from Canada

TIRUPUR, AUG. 1. A group of knitwear exporters who visited Canada recently has bagged orders worth Rs. 30 crores.

The South India Hosiery Manufacturers' Association president, Mohan P. Kandasamy, said the 10-day visit was organised jointly by the association and the Textiles Committee. Nearly 10 exporters held discussions with buyers in Canada (Montreal and Toronto). Meetings were also held with a number of representatives of retail outlets in Canada.

The exporters received orders worth Rs. 30 crores and enquiries for another Rs. 30 crores.

Mr. Kandasamy said the exporters had to gear to face the cost competitiveness in the international market especially after phasing out of quotas. Though enquiries were encouraging, the buyers demanded a reduction in prices. The association organised a similar visit to China earlier and planned more such visits to help especially new exporters bag more orders. Through international visits, existing exporters were able to meet new buyers, and new exporters were able to improve their export performance. He said the exporters should be assisted to bring down the production cost so that they would be able to improve their cost competitiveness.

As part of its efforts to help exporters, the association already set up a business centre to provide information about the export market opportunities and also to create a database about the member units. The objective was to help the exporters share the resources available and improve the market potential for their products, he said.
