KKNPP to dispel myths regarding nuclear energy

KKNPP administration would establish an information centre shortly to dispelfears about nuclear reactors, radiations, etc.

Besides executing community development programmes in the villages around Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project site, the KKNPP administration would establish an information centre shortly to dispel fears about nuclear reactor, radiation and other related issues, Site Director, KKNPP, R.S. Sundar has said.

Speaking to reporters at Anu Vijay Township on Tuesday afternoon after the first reactor’s synchronization with the grid, a visibly relaxed Mr. Sundar said a sustained campaign was launched with ulterior motive in the habitations around KKNPP that the villagers would be evicted from their homeland once the reactors attained criticality and power generation was started. The malicious campaign had been belied as no such relocation was enforced even after the first reactor had been synchronized with the grid. To smash myths in the minds of the public about nuclear reactors, radiation etc. the KKNPP would shortly establish a full-fledged information centre where all sorts of literature on nuclear energy would be made available in Tamil, English and Malayalam. Moreover, community development activities would be taken up in more villages with much vigour.

Construction phase

Asserting that the second reactor of KKNPP would attain criticality in July next year, Mr. Sundar said the experience gained by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited engineers in the construction of the first two units would considerably reduce the ‘construction phase’ of the third and fourth reactors.

“The delay in completing the first unit was not only due to minor technical complications… but we took extreme care in checking and re-checking every data we obtained during the tests and trial runs to satisfy ourselves.

Ultimately, we’ve ensured incident-free synchronization of the first reactor followed by remarkable criticality,”

Mr. Sundar said. Terming today’s synchronization as “high drama” being enacted by the KKNPP to satisfy Russian President Vladimir Putin even as he was holding talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Moscow, anti-KKNPP struggle committee coordinator S.P. Udayakumar declared that no power was being generated at KKNPP.

“We’ll hold discussion at Idinthakarai with the community leaders and those who support anti-KKNPP protests on the situation that has developed after the “fake synchronization”,” Dr. Udayakumar said.
