Keep 3 MBBS seats under freedom fighters quota: court

CHENNAI, JUNE 28. The Madras High Court today directed the medical education selection committee to keep three MBBS seats under the freedom fighters quota.

This interim direction was given by Justice R. Balasubramanian on a batch of petitions seeking to extend the benefits of a special category to grandchildren of freedom fighters to enable them to apply for MBBS under the quota.

The petitioners said three seats had been reserved only for "children of freedom fighters." Applications from grandchildren of freedom fighters under the special category were not being accepted by authorities on the ground that it was applicable only to "children" and not "grandchildren."

Grandchildren of freedom fighters were entitled to apply for engineering courses under the quota, they said, adding, "there is no justification for the government to refuse a similar claim in the case of medical education."
