Karunanidhi asks Sonia for rollback in fuel prices

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, on Tuesday said he had petitioned the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Sonia Gandhi, asking for a rollback in petrol and diesel prices.

In replies to a set of questions, Mr. Karunanidhi said he asked for the rollback during the function organised to mark the launch of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. He had also asked for the removal of the cash withdrawal tax for amounts of Rs.25,000 and above from current accounts. "I have asked for reconsidering of these two decisions," he said.

Referring to the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the order of the Madras High Court against the State Government order abolishing the Common Entrance Test for professional courses, he said if the Government were truly interested in the welfare of rural students, it would have introduced an ordinance abolishing the CET prior to the holding of the test.

To a question on The Hindu publishing his remarks criticising a report on the Automobile Testing Facility near Chennai, he said the Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu , N. Ram, had demonstrated his "political decency and culture" by publishing the criticism, and this gave him immense satisfaction.
