Kannur KAP camp attacked

KOZHIKODE NOV. 9. The office of the Assistant Commandant of the Kerala Armed Police (KAP), headquarters of the 4th Battalion at Mangattuparambu, in Kannur district, came under attack on Friday night.

Reliable sources said that windowpanes and the name board of the office were destroyed in a stone-throwing incident at around 8.30 p.m. However, senior officials denied that such an incident had taken place in the camp. "Nothing has happened. It is all rumours,'' the Commandant, Suresh Raj Purohit, told The Hindu over the phone today. It is learnt that trouble had been brewing for some time in the camp between the senior officers and the constabulary over the allegations of harassment of junior-level officers.

Two havildars — Rajashekara Varma and K. Radhakrishnan — were placed under suspension for allegedly giving an interview to the visual media about these allegations.

Sources said that the majority of the police personnel also kept away from the sports competitions held for the battalions in the camp on Saturday. However, senior officers compelled the constables to take part in the competitions. But Mr. Purohit termed the allegations as baseless and fabricated to tarnish the image of the senior police officers.
