Jayalalithaa to decorate Kancheepuram Collector

CHENNAI, AUG. 14. The Kancheepuram Collector, R. Venkatesan, has been adjudged the "Best Collector." The award carries a gold medal, a merit certificate and Rs. 25,000 in cash to be credited in the district fund. It will be presented during the next conference of Collectors.

Mr. Venkatesan is one of the five persons and three institutions whom the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, will decorate on Independence Day, in appreciation of their meritorious service to the disabled.

She will hand over the other awards after hoisting the national flag at Fort St. George, an official release said here today.

K. Chellamuthu of Dindigul district has been chosen for the "Best Disabled Rehabilitation Officer" award and Mayil Vahanan Natarajan of Chennai for the "Best Doctor" award. The "Best Social Worker (disabled welfare)" award will go to S. Sankara Raman, secretary, Amar Seva Sangam in Tirunelveli district and the "Best Social Worker (women's welfare)" to S. Stephen Vidyaakar of the Coimbatore-based Udhavum Karangal.

Private employer award

The Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (P) Limited, Tiruvallur district, has been adjudged the "Best Private Employer", the Cheran Region Christian Society for Disabled Children, Coimbatore, the "Best Institution (disabled welfare)" and Asha Nivas, Chennai, the "Best Institution (women's welfare)."

The Chief Minister would distribute food packets to disabled children at the function. Simultaneously, food packets would be given to 1,000 disabled children in their institutions, the release said.
