IUML to lodge protest with UDF liaison panel

ALAPPUZHA, OCT. 7 . The Education Minister and IUML leader, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, today said the statements made by the Congress leader and former MP, V. M. Sudheeran, against the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, violated the norms of political ethics and that his party would take up the matter with the UDF Liaison Committee.

At a press conference here, Mr. Basheer said Mr. Sudheeran's statements had belittled Mr. Kunhalikutty before the public and had cast aspersions on the credibility of the IUML. "The attack on the IUML was without any valid reason," he said.

The Minister said the IUML cannot be blamed for the defeat of Mr. Sudheeran in the Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency in the last general election.

Mr. Basheer recalled that the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, had pointed out that the decision of the Industries Minister on mineral sand-mining was in tune with the decision of the Cabinet. "So, what right does Mr. Sudheeran have to blame Mr. Kunhalikutty?" he asked. "A final decision on the issue of mineral sand-mining from the coastal areas of Alappuzha would be taken only after the court verdict."

'Ready for fresh study'

Mr. Basheer said that studies conducted by the University of Kerala and the Cochin University of Science and Technology had given the nod for sand-mining with due precaution. The Minister said the State Government had only stayed the proceedings on the issue and had not revoked it.

On the Kerala Congress (B) leader, R. Balakrishna Pillai's statement against the IUML, Mr. Basheer said Mr. Pillai seemed to be harbouring the hope that the IUML Ministers would also be ousted from the Cabinet like him.
