TAMIL NADU

It's the Govt. which failed: Karunanidhi

CHENNAI Oct. 28. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today disputed the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's charge that the Opposition had not done anything to get Tamil Nadu's share of Cauvery water from Karnataka.

Referring to her statement made at Thanjavur on Monday, Mr. Karunanidhi charged that it was the State Government, which had not taken any concrete step to get water from the neighbouring State.

In a statement here, he said that unlike the Karnataka Chief Minister, who had been acting in close coordination with the Opposition parties on the Cauvery issue, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister never consulted the Opposition.

On the other hand, the DMK, as a responsible Opposition party, was repeatedly taking up the issue. During the recent visit of the Prime Minister to Tamil Nadu, he made a personal appeal seeking early convening of a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority. But the Chief Minister, who did not bother to meet the Prime Minister, had just sent a routine letter to him.

Mr. Karunanidhi also listed the steps taken by the DMK, including the constitution of a Tribunal and the CRA.
