ERODE: Books on the life history of Mahatma Gandhi in English and Tamil draw students and youths like a magnet. School children are no exception. How to make them improve their book reading habits? Or enthuse them to start a small library at home?

The People Thinkers' Forum arranged a ten-day Book Festival here beginning from August 11 and 75 quality publishers and printers participated in it.

The Organiser, President of the People Thinkers' Forum, T. Satalin Gunasekaran said that though this was the first time in Erode such a big book festival was being conducted, the response was remarkable. What was even more noticeable was the "disciplined" crowd of students and public at the stalls. He said book reading would refine and reform a person.

Shopkeepers said some publishers were initially reluctant but a smile returned to their faces when buyers started pouring in. They said if the forum conducted the festival every year, certainly they would market their products. Who is the much sought after author? Of course the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Besides books related to Science and Technology. Dictionaries by various companies, available from Rs 25 to Rs 500, are in good demand. Name it, you have it - Tamil literature, books on self-confidence and cartoon packs. Also for the middle-aged Mahabharatha, Ramayana and other ancient historic books are available. A good collection of books on computers and CDs are much in demand. Almost 50 per cent bought books. To sum up, it was an evening worth spent.
