It pays to be street smart in a city

SAY YES TO FAST BUCKS: Even as the poster on an autorickshaw announces about the one-day strike observed by auto-drivers' associations, another is seen plying on roads, at Goripalayam in Madurai on Tuesday. Photo: S. James

For autorickshaw drivers in Madurai, it was business as usual on a strike day

When autorickshaw drivers' associations in the city called for a strike on Tuesday in protest against revision of prices of petrol and diesel, there was apprehension that the absence of common man's mode of transport will be felt on the road.

Not all drivers responded to the call. For many, it was business as usual.

As one driver quipped, "The loss in not operating the vehicle for a day will be more than the cumulative increase in price of petrol calculated for a month." The irony of the situation was that many autorickshaws plied as usual, displaying posters announcing the strike.
