`Insurance surveyors should instil confidence in clients'

CHENNAI DEC. 7. Surveyors have to primarily protect insurance companies from false claims and also instil confidence among clients, V. Jagannathan, chairman, United India Insurance, said today. "Unless you convince the customer that you are taking steps to assess the loss correctly, it will be a difficult task," he told a gathering of surveyors and insurance officials.

The insurer, he said, would be upset due to the loss incurred and anxious to know if the amount lost could be recovered. He urged surveyors to update their knowledge on diverse insurance-related aspects, and not hesitate to employ experts to ensure proper assessment. Surveyors should also strive to educate the public on loss assessment, he said.

Mr. Jagannathan was addressing the inauguration of a training programme on automobile insurance and survey, organised by the Institute of Loss Adjusters.

N. Velayutham, president, ILA, recalled that loss adjusters lacked specific guidelines till a few decades ago and such workshops were necessary to help them update knowledge.

The five-day programme includes courses on rules pertaining to road accidents and theft of vehicles, the necessity and methodology of painting, a session on the use of LPG in automobiles, and a factory visit to an automobile company.
