Information campaign provides opportunities to rural students

VELLORE: While students of urban schools get a lot of opportunities such as inter-school competitions to display their skills in oratory, essay-writing and quiz, rural students rarely get them.

Under these circumstances, the inter-school competitions conducted during the five-day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign provided ample opportunities to the students from schools in Banavaram and surrounding villages to exhibit their oratorical skills and general knowledge.

The campaign is being organised jointly by the Press Information Bureau, Southern Region, and the various departments under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Banavaram near Sholinghur.

Speaking on the topic "Unemployment and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP)" at the oratorical competition held on Wednesday, the students expressed their concern at the mounting unemployment problem among the educated youth.

They said that it was the duty of the Central and State Governments to provide employment. They hailed the NREGP of the Government of India, under which the applicants would be given employment within 15 days of their application, failing which they would be given unemployment allowance. Either they would be provided employment within five km of their residence or they would be given jobs with higher income if the workplace were more than five km away.
