Implement Avinashi-Athikadavu water project: NGO

The Thamizhaga Neer Melanmai Aadharavu Iyakkam, a not-for-profit organisation, has urged the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to implement the decades-old Avinashi-Athikadavu ground water project.

Under the scheme it was suggested that surplus water from the Pilloor dam be taken to Karamadai and to other places including Avinashi and Perundurai.

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, Iyakkam secretary S.K.Kannappan said the scheme will help Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts where ground water table had dipped to over 1000 feet. Crores of rupees are being spent on power supply every year to supply drinking water and irrigate fields.

Recharge of ground water

“This project will help recharge ground water in these three districts that cover eight assembly constituencies. We have written to the MLAs and have urged them to remind the State government to take up the project,” he said.

When the scheme was drawn up it was to have cost around Rs. 1,900 crore. Mr. Kannappan said that if the government cannot fund it, the Iyakkam will crowd-fund it.

The scheme was also named the Mel Bhavani project and was rechristened as Athikadavu-Avinashi ground water project in 1972.
