IIM-Tiruchi to follow new quota system

10% quota for poor in general category will be implemented

The Indian Institute of Management-Tiruchi will follow the new quota system for student admission from 2019-20 academic year, according to its Director Bhimaraya Metri.

In an interaction with media persons here on Saturday, he said the Ministry of Human Resources and Development had sent a circular on the method to be adopted for admitting students. The 10% quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the general category would be implemented in student admission. Candidates of parents, whose income was less than Rs. 8 lakh per annum, were eligible to seek admission under 10% quota for EWS. The process for giving effect to the new quota system had already begun. But the modalities were being worked out.

Mr. Metri said that IIM-Ranchi was coordinating admission to various IIMs in the country. The total number of seats and related data had to be compiled for IIM-T. It would then be communicated to the coordinating institute.

He said the Central government had made it clear that the existing student strength in the open category should not come down. Out of 100%, 50% would be kept under open category.

It had been decided to increase the student intake by 25% from existing intake. The MHRD had already permitted the plan to increase the student intake. It would be 210 from 180 seats. The increase in intake would come into effect from 2019-20. The institute was fully equipped to accommodate the increased intake. It had sufficient classrooms and faculty members. One more hostel was being constructed and the work would be over by August.
