Idol lifting case: accused produced in court

The Idol Wing police on Monday presented the accused in cases of idol lifting Subash Chandra Kapoor, suspended Special Sub-Inspector Subburaj and some others in a Kumbakonam court.

Miscreants had stolen 20 icons from the Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple at Siddhamalli in Ariyalur district in 2008.

A total of 14 persons were charged with committing the crime.

While one person turned approver, two other accused died during the investigation period. The others are being prosecuted.

The Idol Wing police produced American national Subash Chandra Kapoor and Bhagya Kumar of Harbour, Chennai, before the court that posted the next hearing to October 4.

Likewise, the two were also booked in another case of idol lifting at the Sri Brihadeeswarar temple, Sripuranthan, in Ariyalur district dating back to 2008 along with five others. The hearing in this case was also posted to October 4.

The Court posted for October 6, the next hearing in the case relating to selling of idols seized from a smuggler in Ooranipuram in Virudhunagar district in 2008. The suspended SSI Subburaj, who is one of the accused along with suspended DSP Khader Basha, was produced before the court during Monday’s hearing.
