`I am happy to interact with the audience'

Ramya Krishnan

After spending nearly two decades in the film field, Ramya Krishnan is in the limelight for a different reason. She is compering a game show on Sun Television. Ramya Krishnan, who has acted in all south Indian languages and in Hindi, talks about her career and her continuing interest in films.

My first movie was `Vellai Manasu'. That was nearly 20 years ago. It was a new experience. We did not get the kind of exposure artists get these days. Today they get publicity from print and electronic media even before they get a break.

In 20 years, I have done nearly 200 films... I would gladly pick a couple of Telugu movies, including "Suthradharulu" directed by K. Viswanath. It is one real good film I have done. In Tamil it is "Sigaram" which I did with K. Balachander. Then it is "Padaiyappa" with Rajnikant and "Panchathanthiram" with Kamal Haasan. Another one is "Kanavumeippada Vendum". These are the few I can remember now.

Even after marriage I continued in films. Not that the offers were pouring in, but that is not the reason for me to jump onto the small screen. Even if I did not get any offer, I would be very happy to sit at home with my baby. But I never missed anything.

"Thanga Vettai" just happened. My sister Vini had come from Australia for vacation. I came Chennai to meet her and that's when the "Thanga Vettai" offer came in. From the time I accepted my first film, my attitude has been to grab whatever best comes in my way. Opportunity does not knock at your door very often. When you get some thing good take it up. I thought for a while and decided to do "Thanga Vettai".

In terms of awards, I have received little compared to number of films I have done. I have got one Filmfare award and one from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Governments.

My favourite stars in Tamil are Kamal Haasan and Rajnikant. Among youngsters Vijay and Suriya. Arya in "Arinthum Ariyamalum" was good. Among actresses I like Thrisha. In Hindi my alltime favourites are Rekha, Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan. Among the younger generation it is Kajol, Susmitha Sen, Shah Rukh Khan and Abishek Bachchan.
