Honour for Sanskrit scholar

S. Sambanda Sivacharya, an 89-year-old Sanskrit scholar and researcher in the French Institute of Pondicherry , has been selected for the Presidential Award of Certificate of Honour for lifetime achievement in Sanskrit language and literature. The award includes a certificate of honour, a memento and a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh.

“I am very happy to receive the award. It is the result of my hard work and affection for the language and the outcome of the good deeds in my previous birth,” said the Sivacharya, who is among the first in his generation to get the award.

Born on January 6, 1927 in a family of archakas, Sambanda Sivacharya studied the temple rites and Vedas under his father D. Subrahmanya Gurukkal at the age of seven.
