Hepatitis B vaccination camp for tsunami-hit children

`Steps will be taken to administer three doses to children under five'

NAGERCOIL: The Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, on Friday inaugurated administration of third dose of Hepatitis B vaccine at a camp organised at Kovalam near Kanyakumari for the benefit of tsunami-affected children.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the Government had been implementing various health programmes to render service to the poor and downtrodden. Steps were taken to administer three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine to tsunami-affected children under the age group of five.

Camps were organised in more than 13 schools from Kovalam to Amanakkanvilai in the coastal areas of the district with an intention of injecting Hepatitis B vaccine.

When fishermen were put to untold hardship after the killer waves, which hit the coastal areas of the district, the Government swung into action to ensure rescue and rehabilitation measures, the Minster said.

The Government took immediate action to sanitise the coastal areas under the supervision of two special officers, he said.

The Government very keen on ensuring the welfare of the tsunami-affected children and women, providing treatment as well as socio-psychological care to them, he said.
