Heavy inflow into Vaigai dam; flood anticipated

MADURAI: With the catchment areas of Vaigai dam receiving heavy rainfall since Saturday late evening, the first flood warning will be issued as and when the water level reaches 66 feet. The level stood at 65.58 feet at 10 p.m. with the dam receiving heavy inflow from Uthamapalayam, Cumbum, Palanichettipatti, Mayiladumparai and Varushanadu, the dam is likely to reach the first warning level by midnight. The second warning will be issued when the level reaches 68.5 feet.

As soon as the level reaches 69 feet, the third and final warning will be issued and water will be released from the dam immediately.

The level in the Periyar dam on Saturday stood at 126.90 feet with an inflow of 739 cusecs and a discharge of 575 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 65.29 feet with an inflow of 1,560 cusecs and a discharge of 271 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 6,584 mcft.

Uthamapalayam registered the highest rainfall of 40 mm followed by Shanmuganadhi 10, Andipatti (Theni) 2 and Veerapandi 1.
