TIRUNELVELI: A proposal to promote two Assistant Engineers as Assistant Executive Engineers and post them in two different categories triggered a protest in the corporation council meeting here on Thursday.

The situation became volatile when Deputy Mayor Viswanathan and other members, cutting across party lines, picked up a heated argument with Mayor A. Jayarani, as she said the council had no power to decide who should be posted in which post.

As per the proposal placed before the meeting, the AEE (Mechanical and Solid Waste Management), which was lying vacant for some time, might be filled with D. Samuel Selvaraj, Assistant Engineer (Mechanical and Solid Waste Management), who was discharging the duties of the AEE (Mechanical and Solid Waste Management) for over two years.

Since Mr. Samuel did not possess the prescribed educational qualification, his present position might be promoted as AEE (Mechanical and Solid Waste Management), and salary could be fixed after it was ratified by the government.

Similarly, the post of AEE, Palayamkottai Zone, which was lying vacant after Narayanan Nair was promoted as EE (Planning), might be filled with AE, S. Lenin, the proposal said.

Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party shouted that Mr. Samuel Selvaraj, reportedly senior to Mr. Lenin, should be appointed as AEE, Palayamkottai Zone.

Interestingly, when S. Navaneethan, one of the DMK members, supported Mr. Lenin's appointment as AEE, Palayamkottai Zone, he faced the wrath of Mr. Viswanathan, also from DMK, saying that he should abide by what he said.

Ms. Jayarani said the council could only decide promotion of AEs but had no powers to decide as to who should be appointed in which post.

The Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, said the council had powers to decide the right candidate for any post bringing back normality in the hall.

Roundtana issue

While deciding to reduce the diameter of Chellapandian roundtana, as it causes frequent traffic snarl at Vannarpettai, the meeting resolved to determine the size of the small traffic island around the statue of former Speaker, Chellapandian, after holding detailed discussion with district administration and traffic police.

Another proposal ensured the setting up of a free blood pressure finding centre in the new bus-stand at Vaeinthankulam.
