Over one lakh families identified as beneficiaries in the Union Territory

The Health department, under the auspices of Puducherry State Health Mission, on Saturday launched the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the flagship health insurance programme of the National Democratic Alliance government.

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao jointly launched the programme by distributing certificates to various empanelled healthcare providers at a function held at the Government General Hospital.

The empanelled hospitals includ various government and non-governmental institutions, which were empanelled after systematic inspection of the existing facilities in institutions as per the requisite norms, an official release said.

The scheme is targeted for rural and urban poor. Around 1.03 lakh families were identified as beneficiaries for the scheme in the Union Territory, the release said.

Rs. 5 lakh cover

The centrally sponsored scheme will provide free annual cover of up to Rs. 5 lakh a family. The State government will bear 40% of the premium and the remaining amount will be paid by the Centre. The U.T.’s share as premium would be Rs. 430 a person, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao had said on Friday.
