German medical team in Kodaikanal to treat burn victims

Dindigul: Normally, foreign tourists come to Kodaikanal to relax and enjoy the salubrious climate and the sylvan surroundings.

But, a team of plastic surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses from Germany, carrying equipment and medicines worth a few crore of rupees in hands and love and affection in their heart, have landed on the princes of hills with a noble mission - Serving poor burn victims.

The team would stay till March 26 to treat burn victims who registered their names for free treatment at the Paasam Hospital, popularly known as German Hospital in Kodaikanal. It is their fifth visit to the hill station.

Many in the medical team are very familiar to some patients who have been undergoing corrective surgeries for the second or third time in the past two or three years.

Led by Dr. Lutz Gruhl, who has been visiting the hill station for the five years, the team has performed corrective surgeries from day one on first come first serve basis.

Patients whose faces, limbs and body affected by fire and boiling water with in and outside Tamil Nadu received world-class treatment free of cost.

Toys and toffees

Besides extending clinical assistance, effective counselling was also given to patients. These caring and kind-hearted surgeons have comforted child patients with foreign toys and toffees.

Dr. Mascarenhas, director of the hospital, said more than 450 patients had registered their names with the hospital for treatment of which 150 were acutely affected patients.

Top priority was given to acute cases.

Even critical cases were handled with acute care using sophisticated imported equipment, he said.

This time, we have patients even from Sri Lanka.

Above all it was a great mission with noble vision.
