Haunt of antique collectors

The road near the Jumath Mosque, Thazheangadi, Vadakara, is a favourite haunt of antique collectors. Shops selling antiques dot the area.

Many VIPs, bureaucrats and film stars are avid collectors of antiques. N.V.P. Suneer, partner, Antique Gallery, Thazheangadi, says that two former Director Generals of Police (DGPs), Hormese Tharakan and Rajagopal, bureaucrat Amitabh Kant and film star Mammootty have visited his shop.

The collections at his shop include chandeliers from Belgium, grand piano, Chinese crockery and large Chinese vessels, telescopes brought from England and Kerala-style furniture and imported ones as well.

People who build new house frequent antique shops seeking traditional furniture, says Mr. Suneer. He sources his collections from cities such as Bangalore and Mumbai. His father, who was an avid collector of antiques, set up the shop 18 years ago.
