"Halt Sethu project"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI : Fishermen from coastal districts held a demonstration here on Monday demanding an immediate halt to the Sethu Samudram canal project (SSCP).

They said that the project would completely destroy the livelihood of lakhs of fishing people, would deplete marine life and affect the environment irreversibly. They urged public financial institutions not to invest in the SSCP as it was a wasteful investment.

Calling it "unscientific, environmentally destructive and economically unviable," leaders of the Movement Against Sethu Samudram Shipping (Sea Channel) Canal Project claimed that the dredging so far had resulted in depletion of fish resources and damage to nets amounting to "lakhs of rupees."
