Govt. urged to halt illegal adoption of babies

HYDERABAD, JAN. 31. The Nangara Bheri Lambada Hakkula Porata Samithi has urged the Government to immediately halt the babies adoption process, intervene in cases where permission has been given for adoption and cancel guardianship orders given to foreign parents.

In a memorandum submitted to S. Chellappa, Principle Secretary, Women Development, Child Welfare Department, a copy of which was released to the press here on Thursday, Tejavath Bellaiah Naik, State president, alleged it was because of the Government's neglect that the sale of Lambada children was continuing unabated.

He sought to know why the Government was hesitant to take action against organisations which were still procuring babies illegally. It was the responsibility of the Government to take care of these `artificially orphaned' children till they reach adulthood and as such babies from different organisations like the Tender Loving Care Home, Mission to the Nations and others should be brought to the Sishu Vihar immediately.

In a separate press statement, Gramya, an NGO, requested the Hyderabad Collector to take custody of the child, Sucharitra, in TLCH as the agency had been derecognised by the Government. Action should be taken against such institutions allegedly trading in children, it said.
