`Govt. slack in securing release of arrested fishermen'

Pondicherry Nov. 7 . The secretary of the Pondicherry AIADMK State Committee, K. Natarajan, today charged the Congress Government with being slack in taking steps to secure the release of 10 fishermen of Karaikal who were arrested by the Sri Lankan naval authorities when they strayed into the Sri Lankan territorial limits on October 28.

In a statement here, Mr. Natarajan said the territorial administration should have contacted the Union External Affairs Ministry to ensure the safe return of the fishermen to their native village of Cottucherymedu.

He recalled the steps taken by the Tamil Nadu Government in the past to secure the release of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan navy. Hence such steps should be taken by the Pondicherry Administration, he said.

Mr. Natarajan wanted distribution of dhotis and sarees to the poor which should have been done prior to Deepavali. The recent rains caused hardship to them and hence the administration should distribute the garments without delay.
