'Govt. delaying Karaikal fishing harbour project'

Pondicherry Aug. 26. Although the Centre was prepared to sanction Rs 28 crores for a fishing harbour project in Karaikal, the project was getting delayed as the territorial government was yet to furnish details sought by the former, according to N G Panneerselvam, the PMK convener.

In a statement here today, Mr. Panneerselvam said the DMK government had initiated steps, including laying of foundation stone for the project across the Arasalar in Karaikal. Technical and environmental experts from Pune, Kochi and Bangalore had also conducted an extensive study and submitted a feasibility report.

When preliminary works had been completed there was no justification for the present Government in not furnishing replies to nine points raised by the Centre for clearing the project.

Mr. Panneerselvam said the PMK would launch an agitation in cooperation with fishermen to ensure early construction of fishing harbour.
