Governor inaugurates Flag Day collection

CHENNAI DEC. 7. The Governor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao, today inaugurated the Armed Forces Flag Day collection at the Raj Bhavan here.

The Central and State Governments had the ``moral responsibility'' of looking after the welfare of defence personnel and their families, he said in a message.

``Flag day contributions by the public not only symbolise the expression of our gratitude to the Armed Forces for the services rendered by them, but also help to augment funds which can be deployed for their welfare,'' he said.

Mr.Rao said that in 2002-03, Rs.7.31 crore was spent from the Tamil Nadu Ex-Services Personnel Benevolent Fund and Amalgamated Funds on welfare schemes such as scholarships, marriage grants to women, medical care and rehabilitation.

This benefited 19,000 persons. In 2002-03, Tamil Nadu had contributed Rs.5.83 crores towards Flag Day collections.

In the evening, the Adi Dravida Welfare Minister, C. Karuppusamy, presided over the Chennai district flag day celebrations.
