Finance and Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar on Thursday launched the online sale of seafood and fresh fish through www.meengal.com.

The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation (TNFDC) will manage the sales through its restaurant at Teynampet and five permanent fish stalls at Teynampet, Nandanam, Anna Nagar, Chitlapakkam and Santhome.

Delivery charge of Rs. 35 will be collected from customers residing within a 5-km radius from each of these points.

An additional per km rate will be charged after that. Delivery will be made within an hour and will be handled by a private agency. Booking and delivery will be done between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Mr. Jayakumar said that the effort was being taken to encourage local fishermen. “TNFDC purchases the catch from fishermen in Chennai and cleans and sells the fish. We are shifting sale of fish at Kasimedu to an auction hall so that sand grains do not mix with the fish,” he said.

TNFDC sells around 1-1.25 tonnes of fish a day in the city, which amounts to around 450 tonnes a year. In the entire State, 1,000 tonnes are sold a year. “If large quantities of fish are needed for functions, orders have to be made in advance,” said Fisheries Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi.
